YSF Programme

Overview

The exciting programme of the 20th FEBS Young Scientists' Forum (YSF) will start on Wednesday afternoon June 30th, 2021. After the formal ceremony, two outstanding scientists will present their latest achievements: Prof. Sanja Sever (Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA) in the field of kidney disease research and Prof. Eric Westhof (University of Strasbourg, France) on ribosomal translation.

Over the next couple of days, it will be the turn of the YSF participants to present their own work across a broad range of biological research. We will have three dedicated poster sessions and the challenge of 1-minute poster talks! In addition, some YSF participants will be selected to give short talks within symposia.

As well as providing a forum for research presentations, the 20th FEBS YSF will also have a significant focus on career development. ‘Career Skills’ will be presented in three parts, with some aspects also supported by practical exercises in a small-group workshop format:

Part 1: Tips and Tools on CV preparation, paper writing, oral presentations and public engagement in science;
Part 2: Fellowship opportunities:  including examples from EMBO, FEBS and MSCA;
Part 3: Science careers from another point of view:  with contributors from outside academia.

Furthermore, we will also hold a “Careers Roundtable“, with input from several speakers, which will provide a forum to learn about and discuss how to improve skills that will help your success in current, but also possible future, positions.

In addition to the main programme, we have prepared an exciting social programme that will for sure provide an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues and establish new acquaintances, including a pub quiz and excursion to the island Cres.

Amid the other programme elements, we also have two more keynote lectures to look forward to, from Prof. Cecília Maria Arraiano (Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica – ITQB, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal) in the area of RNA and control of gene expression, and from Prof. Nina Vardjan (Institute of Pathophysiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) on astroglial excitability in brain. The 20th FEBS YSF will close late morning on Saturday July 3rd, 2021 and we will then transfer together to the FEBS 2021 Congress in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
